.US Domain FAQ What is .US?
.US is "America's Internet Address." It is the official country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States within the global domain name system (DNS).

On February 1, 2002, NeuStar Registry Services announced the launch of the dot-US (.US) expanded second-level domain. Now, Americans can get their first choice of domain name extensions on the Internet-in a space dedicated to United States businesses, consumers, nonprofit organizations and government!

What makes .US unique and why do I need it?

.US is the only means to establish an American address on the Internet. All U.S. residents, government entities, public service organizations, and businesses are able to establish an American identity on the Internet with a short memorable domain name. (e.g., johnsmith.us, publicservice.us, mycompany.us).

Market research has shown that .US names are very popular with consumers for applications like e-mail, digital identity, and personal Web sites. Government and public interest organizations will use .US addresses to enable citizen-centric e-Gov applications and to serve the needs of the American people. Businesses will use .US domain names to promote themselves as American companies to inspire consumer confidence and to encourage consumers to "buy American."

What will happen to existing .US domain names?
Existing .US registrants (domain name holders) within the "locality space" will retain rights to their existing Internet addresses. In fact, existing domain name holders will benefit from many of the operational improvements and improved security and service levels the Registry will introduce within .US

When will second level .US domain names be available?
All .US second-level domain names not registered during Sunrise, or reserved by the Registry, will be available for "first come, first served" registration commencing April 24, 2002. Registrants who missed out on registering their chosen names in the .biz, .com, .net or .org spaces-or who just want to establish an American identity online-have a golden opportunity with .US! All applicants in the .US expanded namespace are expected to remain in compliance with the U.S. Nexus Requirement.
